The story so far

How I got here.

A handwritten letter from my grandfather, addressed to “Abheejit”, dated June 1999

01 · Nagpur

A name from a letter.

I was born and raised in Nagpur, in the heart of India. The spelling of my name, Abheejit, comes from a letter my grandfather once wrote me. He was a teacher who opened doors for his students, and everything I build carries that legacy forward.

Me as a young boy

02 · 2005

Taking things apart.

As a kid I took apart toy cars and electronics just to see how they worked. In school, I was part of a team that built a Newtonian reflecting telescope for the centenary of physics in 2005.

03 · The setback

The night I failed.

In my second year of mechanical engineering, I failed my exams and lost a year. Riding home that night on a small red scooter, I had an accident.

I cried, and promised myself it would be the last time. That failure became fuel: it's why I build instead of following the usual path.

04 · 2011

Then I built the Batpod.

In 2011 I set out to build a real, rideable Batpod, Batman's motorcycle from The Dark Knight. It became Project Lincoln: India's first, and one of only five in the world. It taught me that an outlandish idea, a small team, and stubbornness can take you almost anywhere.

05 · Today

Now: systems, not single products.

Today I work across a connected body of ventures: REIN (previously Vruksh) for grassroots entrepreneurship, ekatra for learning without the internet, Catalyst Now for a global movement of social innovators, and SAGE at Si Labs to give the social sector the real-time data every other sector takes for granted.

“Why do we fall, Bruce? So we can learn to pick ourselves up.”
